HistoryThe Uchiha clan were one of the founding noble families of Leaf village. The clan itself is said to be descended from the Hyuuga clan who possess the bloodline of the Byakugan eye. Because their clan possessed the Sharingan or "Wheel Eye," the Uchiha excelled at being able to read and fend off attackers. This made them prime candidates to help found the Konoha Military Police Corps. The organization itself would go on to incorporate the Uchiha fan symbol into their official logo.
Select few members of the Uchiha clan possess the ability to activate the bloodline Sharingan eye. This doujutsu (eye skill) gives one the ability to read Genjutsu, Taijutsu and Ninjutsu and then defeat it. As such, the clan member can view a technique being performed and see the tricks and movements required to be able to complete it. However the clan member can not copy techniques which are unique to another bloodline. It also gives one the ability to cast jutsu techniques only possible by possessing the eye.
The clan itself is known for their ties to fire. For a clan ninja to be seen as an adult, they must be able to utilize a Katon (Fire Element) jutsu such as Goukakyuu no Jutsu. Thus is the tie between the manipulation of fire and the mind of an Uchiha member.
Founding |
The Uchiha clan descended from the elder of the two sons entrusted by the Sage of the Six Paths with his power and will. When it came time for the Sage to chose a successor, he questioned the two on what course of action they would follow to bring order to the world. The elder believed that might was the way to bring peace, while the younger believed love was the way. The Sage favored the ideal of the younger brother, and therefore designated the younger as his successor, causing the elder to be filled with jealousy and hatefulness. From the younger boy descended the Senju clan who would be the eternal rivals of the Uchiha.
Before the founding of the ninja villages, the Uchiha were one of the many mercenary clans for hire. Because of their Sharingan, the Uchiha clan came to be known as one of the two strongest clans, the second being the Senju clan. Madara Uchiha was particularly powerful, and, upon attaining the Mangekyō Sharingan, he took control of the clan. Under his leadership the Uchiha grew stronger, conquering whatever clans they came upon, such that, whenever the Uchiha clan was hired for a job, the opposing side would hire the Senju.
Abilities |The sharingan is a special eye ability that is only apparent in the Uchiha clan. It is an advanced characteristic in the pupil of the person's eyes. It is said that the sharingan evolved from the Byakugan, which is excluded from any possible use by anyone except for members of the Hyuuga clan. In terms of mental, emotional, and physical insight, the Byakugan is far more superior than it's succesor. The sharingan has three semi-colons. It fits well since the sharingan can see through and mimic three types of jutsu, which are ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu.
The sharingan's main ability is the mimicery of other jutus. It will copy any ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu. Of course it can also copy the movements of the opponent by studying him or her carefully. The more times the person uses the sharingan, the more jutsus they copy. If they continue to keep the sharingan out, they will continue to copy jutsus even if it's against their will. It acts automatically like a car alarm. If it sees a jutsu, it starts to act up and acts like a defensive system. Like a car's defensive system is an alarm, the sharingan's defensive system is to copy what they see. Although, the sharingan's accuracy of mimicing the techiniques is high, it doesn't gurantee complete mastery of the jutsu. For incredibly difficult and extremely high-level jutsu, it requires practice. Of course the sharingan can speed up the process. It can first copy what hand seals are required (if any at all) and then all they have to do is find the right amount of chakra to exert. If it's a move that requires no hand seals then all they have to do is exert the right amount of chakra into the right place. If it's a taijutsu technique then they will have no problem with that. They can just remember what movements they copied and practice on that. Another ability is that it can see through illusions. For example if there were many bunshin or Kage bunshin all the sharingan user would see is balls of chakra that look like flames. This allows them to seperate what is real and what isn't.
Another 'ability' of the sharingan is the ability to supposedly look into the future. In other words, they can trick they're opponents into thinking that they are fighting a seer. It's just an illusion. A series of different steps are used to create this illusion. First the user makes it seem that they can read minds by using a hypnotic genjutsu and copying their opponents thoughts. For all these steps to work the user and the opponent must make eye-contact. Same goes for the movement copying. The user of the sharingan stares their opponent in the eyes while copying all their movements. The most important thing for a person that does this to do is to make eye-contact.
The sharingan uses up a lot of chakra. However, this only applies if the sharingan user is not an Uchiha. Since they don't have the right blood, they can't use it as effectively and they get exhausted more easiy then members of the Uchiha clan. For example, Kakashi gets exhausted quickly everytime he uses his sharingan. However, Neither Itachi nor Sasuke feel the same way. They are both members of the Uchiha clan so they have a direct heritage of the sharingan. Pretty much, blood plays a big role in the chakra usage of the sharingan. If you have the right blood, you don't get tired easily. If you don't have the right blood then be more careful when you use the sharingan.
The sharingan also many disadvantages such as speed. It can't see speed very well because most of the time it's not chakra based speed. It's harder for users of the sharingan to see speed. That's what makes taijutsu a dangerous enemy to it. Combining taijutsu and speed will give an advantage over the sharingan. Therefore, the sharingan user will have lots of trouble seeing their enemies come at them. Another weakness of the sharingan is that it can't copy bloodline based jutsus. It's just not theirs to copy. Basically, physical combat is the most dangerous to the sharingan. It's not only unpredictable but almost unstoppable for sharingan users. However, it's wickedly powerful in the areas of copying ninjutsu and genjutsu.
Mangekyou Sharingan, Tsukuyomi. Uchiha's ultimate genjutsu. So far it's only been used by Itachi. The focus of this genjutsu is to cause a breakdown in someone's mind and spirit. First Itachi looks at his opponent in the eyes. He then chooses a form of torture or a past event that hurt that person the most. Also Itachi can make the person feel a certain amount of time in an instant. For example, Itachi uses a form of torture on Kakashi. Itachi made Kakashi think that he was really getting katanas shoved into himself. Itachi, being the master of the illision was doing all the shoving. Itachi also made it seem to him that it felt like 72 hours (three days). In a form of a past memory, Itachi made Sasuke relive the day their parents were killed by Itachi. This only lasted for 24 hours. This genjutsu causes a lot of pain that lingers around for a while. However, it's also apparently dangerous to Itachi as well. He can't seem to use it much because it could be fatal

Sharingan Stages Normal Uchiha Clan Member Eye The normal eye for an Uchiha clan member resembles any normal human eye with iris, pupil and sclera.
Sharingan partially activated - One Comma
This is the first variation of a partially developed Sharingan eye. The clan members pupil will turn red and develop one of the wheel swirls. When Uchiha Sasuke finally activated his Sharingan, his left eye took this form.
Sharingan partially activated - Two Comma
This is the second variation of a partially developed Sharingan eye. The clan members pupil will turn red and develop two of the wheel swirls. When Uchiha Sasuke finally activated his Sharingan, his right eye took this form.
Sharingan fully activated - Three Comma
This is the final normal form of the Sharingan eye. The clan members pupil will turn red and develop three of the wheel swirls in both eyes. In this form the clan member can read Genjutsu, Taijutsu and Ninjutsu, learn how the skill is done and then copy it to be used later. This form can also initiate the Mangekyou "Kaleidoscope" form.
Sharingan - Uchiha Sasuke's Mangekyou (Kaleidoscope) Form
Itachi sought to protect his younger brother from Uchiha Madara. To that end he used a jutsu to implant his Mangekyou and its techniques into Sasuke. When Sasuke's Mangekyou was initially activated, it resembled the version seen in Itachi, due to Itachi's sealing of Amaterasu into Sasuke's eye as a defense mechanism. Later Sasuke's Mangekyou took on its own look. Even though it bore a new shape, Sasuke was still able to utilize Amaterasu.
Sharingan - Uchiha Madara's Eternal Mangekyou (Kaleidoscope) Form
Unable to accept being blind, Madara did everything he could to regain his vision. A desperate Madara eventually removed his brother's eyes to use as his own. As a result, Madara awakened a new more powerful set of eyes which allowed him to see the light once again. This new eye form would combine the look of both he and his brother's Mangekyou Sharingan.
The Mangekyou Sharingan is different to everyone who has it.

Amaterasu, named for the Goddess of the Sun, is a Ninjutsu technique which uses the Mangekyou form of the Sharingan eye to create a powerful black fire. This jutsu is generated by the right Mangekyou eye. It has been said that anything within the Mangekyou's vision will burn to ash if consumed by the fire. The fire itself is said to burn for 7 days and 7 nights. Because of the amount of chakra needed to use the technique, it can only be used on a very limited basis daily. Though it is regarded as the strongest of Mangekyou's physical attacks, usage of the ability will degrade the eye further and lead the user to blindness.

Fun Note: In myth, the god Izanagi beget the gods Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo.
Izanagi, named for a god who helped spawn many islands and deities, is a Genjutsu technique which was declared a Kinjutsu by the Uchiha Clan. Using Izanagi grants the clan member the ability to turn wounds and disadvantages into nothing more than dream. It also makes attacks and advantageous maneuvers real, thus giving one complete control over their own reality through an illusion cast on themselves. The drawback being, the clan member uses the jutsu at the cost of their own vision being lost forever. This result caused the clan to declare it forbidden. When the clan member uses the jutsu, any damage received while it is active is negated. Their crippled form will shudder away like an illusion into nothingness while they appear unharmed away from the danger.
The jutsu normally has a short time limit which varies from clan member to clan member. This was extended through the experimentation of Orochimaru, which granted almost a minute of immortality for each eye sacrificed. This was used to full effect when ANBU Root leader Danzou had numerous viable Sharingans implanted in his right arm. This extended time was active at the cost of an ongoing drain on Danzou's chakra. So when active, it allowed him to absorb numerous fatal attacks at the cost of one of the eyes permanently closing on his arm and becoming useless. Should Danzou need to conserve chakra and protect the eyes, he would cancel the jutsu and attempt to avoid critical hit.

Kamui is a Ninjutsu technique which uses the Mangekyou Sharingan eye to generate an imploding transportation vortex. To begin Kakashi forms a handseal to change his normal three tomoe Sharingan into a new Mangekyou form. He then focuses on an area of his target. The surrounding area will then warp and collapse in on itself, quickly reducing the surrounding area to nothingness. The technique will transport the focused area away to another location. The technique caused a huge strain on Kakashi, utilizing a great deal of chakra. He was able to use the technique twice in succession and then revert back to three tomoe. It is unknown how many times he could use it before total exertion.

Tsukuyomi, named for the God of the Moon, is a Genjutsu technique which uses the Mangekyou form of the Sharingan eye to generate a powerful illusion. This jutsu is generated by the left Mangekyou eye. This highly advanced technique can not be used extensively because of the toll it places on the user. To utilize the illusion, the clan member will look into the eyes of his opponent and cast a Genjutsu spell on them. The illusion takes place in the mind of the one affected, while under the jutsu the victim is at the total mercy of the user. The user has full control over space and time in the jutsu and can place the one affected through any hell they desire for any length desired. The technique itself only lasts for but a second in reality, but the one affected could have lasted through several days of torture.
It is said only a natural born member of the Uchiha Clan can overcome the illusion. To counter the technique, however, Mangekyou is not required. A highly trained normal Sharingan user can break the illusion, causing the Mangekyou user to experience additional weakness from using it.
Susanoo - God of the Sea and Storms

Susanoo, named for the God of the Sea and Storms, is a technique which uses the Mangekyou form of the Sharingan eye to create a sword wielding spectral form which will surround the user. This jutsu is generated by both Mangekyou eyes. Susanoo will first form around the user as a skeleton. This skeletal form will then generate muscle and armor for battle and wield both a sword and shield.
The sword is formed out of the sake in the gourd it holds, meaning the sword has no true physical form. This legendary weapon, known as Totsuka's Sword and the Sakegari (Sake Cutting) Long Sword, utilizes the main ability of the jutsu. Anyone or anything cut by the blade will be sealed away into a Genjutsu of blissful oblivion until the end of time. It is said the sword is thus the ultimate counter to Orochimaru's Kusanagi Sword. The shield is known as Yata's Mirror. It is said this shield can defend against any attack. Together the sword and shield will make the Susanoo user nearly invincible. Like other Mangekyou techniques, usage of Susanoo will damages the eyes and health of the user.
