During the Great Ninja Wars, the Village Hidden in the Rain was simply a battlefield. Houses were raided and many families were killed. After war broke out citizens, weak ninja, and children were sent to safe houses at an attempt to keep the future generation safe. Despite being in a 'safe' place, the Academy teachers were often sent out when they were needed to scout and many would never come back. Due to this, moral was low. The war was so relentless as to the fact that the warring countries could care less about who they killed other than their comrades. Trying to combat the despair of all the children's families dying, candy was often used to put the children at ease. The children would take the candy knowing that things were going on, but stayed silent for the most part --not wanting the teachers and such to worry about their well-being.

At a random point during one of the later Wars, a raid for supplies ransacked the village and killed anyone who got in the way. Not wanting anyone to take from the Village, the owners would always fight back, and inevitably, die. The raid was not just a random one for a few desperate supply increase. The raid was an organized assault on the Rain Village. As luck would have it, the safe house was found and many innocents were slaughtered. The particular people who took part in the raiding of the safe house were morbid people, killing mostly for the fun of it and not seeing the benefit of a living resident that could easily create a map of the city. The children's presence wasn't left unnoticed by the raiders either. They killed many children, but there were still a few left. Those that were, were left due to sympathies and just pure exasperation from the raid. With nothing else to cling to, the children took up all the candy they could find left in the safe house and lived off of them until night, when they would leave the storehouse and try to find regular food. Water was never a problem in the constant anguish-driven rain of the war.

Despite being malnourished from then on, many lived on throughout the war. However, only one had made it through the entire war. 'He was a lucky one' as the Medics had said when they came into the storehouse immediately following the end of the war. Midnight was the lone survivor, though he didn't really deserve to be.

As the children had lived off the leftover candy, but still lived in an environment near corpses, their will to stand the smell of decomposing bodies and endurance to keep on living was constantly tested. It was this endurance that waned during the later months after the raid. Many children along with Midnight were beginning to wonder if they were ever going to see someone from the Rain Village help them or even survive the ordeal. It was when they realized that they were running low on food and the children could no longer find food when the children were even more so worried for their own lives. It was with this shortage that a mutual distrust was beginning to stir. Soon after the distrust began to fester, kids would go missing while they were scouting. None could tell what was happening as the children would leave as individuals, not groups or pairs. Though this was much more dangerous, it covered much more area. Due to the nightly slays, there were only four children left. Those that were left included a self-proclaimed leader, his two appointed body guards and Midnight. Despite the distrust among them, the leader felt fine with his two guards. Each of them, minus Midnight, thought that a ninja was killing them off each night; just coincidence really. As if it wasn't obvious enough already, it was Midnight who was killing the children. He knew that if there were less people to eat the food, then it would last longer. Along with this beneficial side, Midnight felt that if the other children weren't capable of defending themselves or at least holding him off until someone heard, then they didn't deserve to live. Of course, since they were his age and most were friends, none of the other children could bring themselves to lay a hand on Midnight. It was all too easy for him to get rid of them.

The night after the fifth remaining child was slain, the leader stayed behind while Midnight was sent alone to look for food. It was obvious that the leader expected him to die during this scouting trip. Midnight was no fool and returned to observe the leader of his group. It was his surprise that the leader stood alone over the two guards that were left lying on the floor, presumably dead. Midnight took out a candy cane with a sharpened point, the only weapon he had to use and sneaked into the storehouse. It was with this weapon that he had killed the others with and soon it would be in his leader's back. Just as Midnight approached the leader, he turned around casually. Midnight knew nothing would come from this and stabbed him perfectly in the heart. All the leader managed was a cough and fell forward into Midnight. Midnight smiled in delirium from the killing as his previous comrade bled his warm red blood onto Midnight's hand and arm. Pulling out the candy cane, Midnight continued eating it blissfully and marveled at the combined taste of peppermint and blood. After he finished it, he ate the rest of the candy all at once and fell into a sugar-induced coma. Of course, this is how the medics found him, alone with the bodies of his villagers; a sob story anyone could make up.
